2019 Healing Through Farming Landscape Tour

Thursday, July 25, 2019, 1:00 AM - 2:30 AM

Relive the past through stories of the therapeutic agricultural history of the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. Join expert horticulturist Nellie Gardner as she shares her experiences growing up on a remote farm on Cape Breton Island and how her daily farm life was remarkably similar to the workday life of the hospital patients. From its beginnings in the 1800s, the Asylum transformed the treatment of people with mental illness by focusing on gardens, farming, and fresh air. Through surviving plants and found relics, the Healing Through Farming shares inspiring stories of striving to help, and ultimately cure, many patients through healthy outdoor activities. -This is an exterior-only tour of the Richardson Olmsted Campus. - Photography is allowed when touring the exterior of the site. For those interested in taking photographs of the interior, please see our public photography tours. - This tour requires the ability to walk for the full duration of the tour. - You are strongly encouraged to bring bottled water as it can get warm both inside and outside the building in the summer. - Tours are rain or shine.
